Contacts, Schottky barriers

Reading: Sze section 7.1 or Singh chapter 6 or Thuselt 6.1

    For the exam:
  • Be able to describe a metal-semiconductor junction. Known under what conditions a Schottky barrier is formed, when an ohmic contact is formed, and when a tunnel contact is formed.
  • Be able to explain why the current in a Schottky diode is carried by majority carriers while the current in a pn-diode is carried by minority carriers.
  • Know the relationship between current and voltage in a Schottky contact.
  • Be able to explain the role of interface states.
